“The strangest claim by Venetian officials is that
the mosque was being attended by too many peo-
ple at a time, exceeding legal limits. The Icelandic
Arts Centre, the organization presenting the
national pavilion, responded in a press release that
‘occupancy of the Pavilion has been tracked con-
sistently by staff and has, after the opening day,
never gone above 100 people at one time.”
Is the controversy surrounding Iceland’s
“Mosque” installation in Venice a genuine
concern over safety or just genuine
Islamophobia?
“People in Iceland say, ‘There haven’t been any
fisherwomen really. There aren’t any now,’” Íris says.
“But that’s just not true.”
Yes, there are Icelandic female fisherman —
fisherwomen.
"Past the tiny windswept village of Buðardalur,
the landscape becomes more dramatic. We
head towards a range of massive mountains,
whizzing up windy roads, going gradually higher
and higher. Draped in deep mist, the place feels
distinctly otherworldly. Were I to be given the job
of location scout for a new King Arthur film this is
where I would set it.”
We tested the limits of a rental car in the
Westfjords.
“I’ll sometimes catch myself in the moment,
standing in front of a lot of people, dancing and
playing music,” she smiles, her eye opening wide.
“It’s so weird! I mean, I’m not some showy dude
trying to get broads by being a DJ. I’m a mom! I’m
a mom playing music in the middle of the night in
some dark basement. I’ve had moments where I
burst out laughing. But I just really love doing it.”
