Setlög milli hraunlaga á Vestfjörðum og Vestur-
landi eru úr lateriti, surtarbrandi, leir og ösku-
kenndu efni. Við athugun á gerð þeirra, steindum
og efnasamsetningu kom í ljós, að samsetningu
þeirra má rekja til palagonitiseringar, veðrunar og
ummyndunar vegna hita og fargs.
