Statistics Iceland provides detailed infor-
mation on the resident population in
Iceland 1 January each year. Figures for
the population on 1 December and prelim-
inary quarterly figures, including main
demographic events, are also published.
Figures on changes in the demographic
characteristics of the Icelandic population
are published yearly, e.g. information on
marriages, consensual unions, divorces,
births, deaths, adoptions, changes in resi-
dence, in citizenship and religious affil-
iation. The latest population projection
projects the population from 2012 to 2061.
A population increase by 0.4%
The population of Iceland was 319,575 1
January 2012, compared with 318,452 1
January 2011. This is an increase of 0.4%.
Migration
Net international migration was -1,404
in 2011 compared with -2,134 in 2010. The
number of immigrants was similar in 2011
as in the previous year. The number of
emigrants declined from 7,759 in 2010 to
6,982 in 2011.
Crude death rate 6.2 per 1,000 inhabitants
In 2011, 1,986 persons died in Iceland, 999
men and 987 women. The crude death rate
was 6.2 per 1,000 inhabitants, a decrease
of 0.1 from 2010. Infant mortality rate in
Iceland was 0.9 per 1,000 live births in
2011.
Life expectancy of males in 2011 was 79.9
years and 83.6 years for females.
The population is projected to be
435 thousand in 2060
The population is projected to be 435
thousand 1 January 2060. The low variant
projects that the number of inhabitants
will be 393 thousand while the high vari-
ants projects 494 thousand.
The age structure of the population will
change in the projection period. The
number of inhabitants aged 65 years old
and over will increase proportionally more
than the working age population and the
number of young people will decrease.
