Locals share their favourite haunts Words JOHN ROGERS Photos ART BICNICK & TIMOTHÉE LAMBRECQ The options for drinking, shop- ping and dining in Reykjavík seem to expand from week to week, with many people fiercely loyal to their favourite pool, bar, coffee spot or record store. Here, we asked a few of the city’s art- ists, dancers, musicians and DJs to share their favourite haunts. Anna Ásthildur DJ & music professional You’ve probably heard this before, but swimming pools in Reykjavík are amazing. Sundhöllin is downtown, but Vesturbæjarlaug is worth the trip. When I say “go swimming” I mean “go sit in a hot tub until you feel like a happy lobster.” Debating politics with the old- er gentlemen who frequent the hot tubs earns you extra points. Árni Kristjánsson DJ & tour guide I love Lucky Records. Going there flicking through the soul records does for me what pilates or yoga does for other people. I also deeply appreciate rum- maging through thrift shops for random odd bits and things. If I’m out and about I visit my DJ haunts for a brew and/or down some chai-infused gooseberry vodka cocktails with the Plútó DJ crew. Ása Dýradóttir Musician Since my apartment is on Baldursgata, I go to Brauð & Co when I wanna feel like a luxu- rious morning king. They open super early, so it’s great to go when the town is still asleep. Their bread is so fucking good it makes me want to cry. I’ve ac- tually cried while eating it. That Danish wheat… Margét Bjarnadóttir Choreographer & visual artist I like to go to Kaffihús Vestur- bæjar for their highly addictive tuna tartine. In the afternoon, I bike to the Marshall House in the harbour area to look at contemporary art. I feel like Reykjavík instantly became 30% better when the Marshall House opened—such an exciting and positive addition to the city and the cultural life. Sigrún Jónsdóttir Musician I like to have dinner at Borðið on Ægissíða with friends. That place is just perfect, it’s small and cosy and the food is deli- cious. After dinner, I like to go to Kex Hostel and meet some more friends and tell them a few good jokes. Then head over to Kaffibarinn and tell more jokes. Then I go to Prikið and grind on the windowsill until it closes. Óskar Þór Sound engineer & DJ I like having dinner at Ban Thai. The food there is amazing—by far the best Thai food in Iceland. My girlfriend and I always bring a small chess table with us, be- cause you have to wait a while for the food, but it's always worth it. If I was going out with friends, Hverfisgata 12 is a fa- vourite—good pizza, nice staff, and the best cocktails. They also have DJs on weekends, and that's always a good thing. Hekla Magnúsdóttir Musician I’m not much of a breakfast per- son but I guess on my perfect day I’d take my family to Grái Kötturinn for pancakes. Then I would go with a friend to BSÍ drive-through and then we would cruise around town lis- tening to Linkin Park and some other questionable music while vaping (I’m just being honest here).
