Manuals of Icelandic.
Easy Readings in Old Icelandic
By W. A. Craigie,
Co-Editor of the Oxford English Dictionary. — I. B.
Hutchen. Edinburgh, 1924. Price 3s. 6d. — „ Unique
among Icelandic Readers"; „The best Icelandic Read-
er so far published"; „A masterpiece of simplicity".
Such was the chorus of praise sung by critics and schol-
ars upon the appearance of this book three years ago.
A Primer of Modern Icelandic
By Snxbjdrn Jonsson,
Sometime translator to the Icelandic Government. •—
Oxford University Press, 1927. Price 7s. 6d. — Con-
tents: Rules of Pronunciation (The Alphabet, Accent,
Vowels, Consonants, Vowel-changes); Grammar; Ex-
ercises and Dialogues; Icelandic Readings; English-
Icelandic and Icelandic-English Vocabularies. —
If you can devote an hour a day to your study, this
manual enables you to acquire in a couple of months
a sound working knowledge of modern Icelandic.
And when travelling in the remoter rural districts of
Iceland, where English is rarely spoken, you will
find that without any previous knowledge of the
language you can make yourself understood in a
satisfactory manner by the simple use of this volume
as a phrase book, so judiciously are the contents of
the dialogues chosen and so full are the vocabularies.
While it cannot be contradicted that the acquisition
of Icelandic used to be a drudgery, it is equally cer-
tain that the advent of these two books has made it
a genuine pleasure. They are bound to reverse the
hitherto prevalent ideas about the difficulties of the
Icelandic language — one of the most euphonic,
mellifluous and logical languages of Europe. —
