I. Introduction
This experiment was carried out at the experimental
farm Skriðuklaustur in Eastern Iceland in the autumn of
1977 (Aðalsteinsson et al. 1978 )-, and at the Agricultural
Research Institute, Keldnaholt, Reykjavík, in the year
1978.
Analysis of the growth of lambs grazed on different
types of green feed and indoors feeding was done at Skriðu-
klaustur. Analysis of the meat quality of chosen carcasses
from Skriðuklaustur was done at Keldnaholt. The carcasses
were dissected into muscle, fat and bone. Sensory evalua-
tions were made on muscle 1. dorsi, muscle semimembranosus
and subcutaneous fat from each dissected carcass. Chemical
analyses were carried out on muscle 1. dorsi and liver.
The effects of different grazingVfeeding treatments
on the meat quality of lamb carcasses are compared in this
experiment. The comparison was divided into five parts:
(1) Comparison of carcasses of mountain-grazed
lambs and lambs grazed on green feed and
those fed indoors.
(2) Comparison of carcasses of lambs fed indoors
on two types of feed.
(3) Comparison of indoor feeding and green feed
grazing.
(4) Comparison of three types of green feed.
(5) Comparison of the effect of finishing lambs
that have been grazing for four weeks on
green feed on aftermath or indoor feeding
during the last week before slaughter.
II. Materials and Methods
The lambs at Skriðuklaustur were divided into six
main groups with 18 ram lambs, either twin lambs or lambs
from hoggets in each group.
The experiment lasted 33 days, from the 22nd of
September to the 24th of October.
The following main groups were in the experiment:
