Fifteen Canadian seamen died
and 14 of them are buried in
Iceland. Iceland held a me-
morial to those brave Cana-
dian seamen 2 August 2006,
at Viðey Island. Canadian and
Icelandic dignitaries were
present at that ceremony. Invi-
tations have been sent for our
ceremony to the HMCS Skee-
na Naval Cadet corps in Port
Hope, Ontario, and especially
to Lt. Chris Barker who led a
group of cadets, and relatives
of the HMCS Skeena veterans,
to Iceland in 2005 to partici-
pate in the ceremony there. Lt.
Barker was in Iceland again at
the 2 August 2006 ceremony.
He will bring pictures and tell
us about that event.
The FOI is working with
Markús Örn Antonsson, Am-
bassador of Iceland to Canada,
and Lt/Col Bud Walsh, Com-
manding Officer of the Cam-
eron Highlanders of Ottawa,
to arrange this ceremony. This
is the 150th anniversary of the
creation of the Ottawa Regi-
ment, so that is why we have
been invited to use their Drill
Hall.
There are 49 Canadian vet-
erans who lost their lives in
Iceland. Twenty-six of them
were with the Royal Canadian
Air Force; 15 were with the
Royal Canadian Naval Volun-
teer Reserve; three were with
the Cameron Highlanders of
Ottawa; two with the Royal
Canadian Navy; two with the
army; one was with the Ca-
nadian Corps of Signals. One
was lost at sea; one is buried at
Reyðarfjörður Cemetery, and
47 at Fossvogur Cemetery.
Peter Holmes, (Major, re-
tired), a member of the FOI,
took a photograph of each of
the headstones of the Canadi-
ans buried there, and will bring
back a CD which will be avail-
able to anyone interested.

HVALEYRI, ICELAND — Premier of Manitoba Gary Doer
made a state visit to Iceland at the end of August at the invitation
of Icelandic Prime Minister Geir H. Haarde. He visited various in-
stitutes and held meetings with government ministers, among oth-
ers, regarding new air travel routes between Iceland and Canada.
When a trip to the Westman Islands was cancelled due to
weather on Saturday morning, Doer requested an opportunity to
play a bit of golf and it came about that his wish was granted when
he was invited to do the rounds at Hvaleyrarvöllur.
He spoke well of his visit to Iceland, and was quite pleased
with the golf course and the assistance of the Keilir Golf Club.
