Singing,
dining and
dancing in
Chicago
The Icelandic Association
of Chicago held a rousing þor-
rablót in early February at the
Cheshire Clubhouse, featuring
Icelandic food, singing, dancing
and a raffl e.

Seattle draws crowd
from Pacifi c Northwest

SEATTLE, WA — The Ice-
landic Club of Greater Seattle
held its þorrablót on February
24 at the Ballard Elks Club in
Seattle.
Attendance was about 100,
including some from Victoria
and Vancouver, BC, and two
servicemen, Kristjan Sigurds-
son and Jon Baldvinsson, from
Fort Lewis near Seattle.
An excellent program was
organized by club board mem-
ber Zoe Bartosh. Live music
was provided by Guðmundur
Símundsson and Sigurður Háf-
steinsson of the well known
band, SÍN, from Iceland. Þor-
ra-food was prepared by chef
Guðmundur Helgason from
Akureyri.
Everyone took part in a sin-
galong before dinner. Margrét
Sölvadóttir read a piece on the
history of þorrablót. Dancing
followed the dinner of tradi-
tional þorra-food, which was
never better. Raffl e prizes in-
cluded two tickets with Icelan-
dair to Iceland.

Ottawa, Montreal celebrate

OTTAWA, ON — The
Friends of Iceland club (FOI)
held a very successful þorrablót
at the home of Kate MacFarlane
and Francois Brazeau on Febru-
ary 24, the third time they have
hosted the event. Over 90 guests
attended — the youngest was a
babe in arms and the oldest were
grandparents.
The table was laden with
Icelandic foods, including rúllu-
pylsa on Icelandic brown bread
with a hint of mint; hangikjöt;
harðfi skur with butter and bren-
nivín; vínarterta; kleinur; pönnu-
kökur; salads; and lots wines
and coffee.
Susan Stephenson, president
of the Icelandic Canadian Club
in Quebec, along with Bernice
(Oddson) Kinnon, led a small
group from Montreal to join
the FOI for the evening. The
two clubs plan on having closer
connections in the future.
Iceland’s Ambassador to
Canada Markús Örn Antons-
son lead an energetic group of
native Icelanders in singing of
rollicking Icelandic songs, with
many FOI members joining in.
It was a wonderful evening, and
enjoyed by all.
