The history of Iceland in DVD form
New German documentary features in-depth coverage
Ron Gryllson
A new documentary dra-matizing Iceland’s liter-ary history has been re-
leased by the German production
company Wokafilm. Myths and
Sagas of the North, produced by
Iceland-o-phile Gabriela Kafka,
comes in two parts, totaling a
hundred minutes in length, and
is now available in English.
The film uses the Edda,
written by the 13th century poet
Snorri Sturluson, as its starting
point and investigates the im-
pact it, and Iceland’s great lit-
erary treasure, the Sagas, have
had on the country over the mast
millennium.
The film is chock full of
beautiful imagery showing
aspects of the Icelandic coun-
tryside from the lava fields to
the high peaks and down to the
crashing seaside. We see many
recreations of medieval times,
with spear-carrying riders on
horseback crossing the extra-
terrestrial landscapes, Viking
ships at sea and full Viking
campsites.
