Christmas in Markerville
a hearty affair
Spectacular number of cookies baked, consumed
Once again about a thousand people from far and wide converged on Markerville for our annual show and sale. We were blessed
with great weather: above zero on all three days.
People were outside having coffee in their shirt-
sleeves. Christmas music filled the air as shop-
pers went from venue to venue: Fensala Gallery,
Creamery Market and Marlene’s Krafty Korner.
Fifteen artisans sold their products over the three
days. We also were partnered this year, through the
advertising, with the Gammel House in Dickson,
Julestue in Spruce View and a Christmas Sale at
the Gordon Hall in Cottonwood.
The Cookie Walk has become a tradition as-
sociated with Christmas in Markerville. For the
past eight years, our members and friends have
made hundreds of dozens of mouth watering cook-
ies. This year they made 1600 dozen! This effort
raised over $4000 again this year.
Boxes of cookies are sold for $5, and part of
the fun is choosing which cookies, and how many,
to fill up your box with. This year the funds will
go towards the restoration of our Markerville Lu-
theran Church.
Many scrumptious treats were on offer that singular day in old
Markerville town. Citizens and visitors would not soon forget.

They certainly have fun at those Vatnabyggð Christmas Parties, by garr! This year, a
Chinese gift exchange brought barrels of laughter from both the givers and the “takers.”
A pot luck feast, carol singing and socializing made for a very festive evening on November
17 in Elfros. Left to right we see Grant Laxdal, Shirley-Ann Laxdal, Noreen Markusson,
Terry Markusson and Dave Shepherd, while Christie Dalman looks on.
Calgary Christmas
party rocks!

The Leif Eiriksson Ice-landic Club of Calgary (LEIC) held their annual
Christmas party at the Calgary
Scandinavian Centre on the last
Saturday of November. The hall
was filled with fun and merri-
ment as almost 200 members
and their friends enjoyed this
special night.
The evening began with
cocktails and delicious appetiz-
ers, including homemade brown
bread served with pickled her-
ring from Calgary and hangikjöt
and rúllupylsa imported from
Palsson’s Family Foods in Ar-
borg, MB.
Alpine Catering Ltd. pro-
vided a traditional turkey dinner,
with all the trimmings, to a very
appreciative crowd. The tasty va-
riety of squares served with cof-
fee and tea were accompanied
by our traditional fare of Icelan-
dic sweets, such as pönnokökur,
skyr and vínarterta, all made by
talented and generous members
of our club.
Brent Grisdale, president of
LEIC, was our very capable MC
for the evening. He welcomed
all in attendance and thanked the
Christmas committee for plan-
ning this successful event. Brent
introduced some special Mark-
erville guests: Bettie Weigl, Al-
berta Fjallkona (& Larry Heth),
Marlene Linneberg, President
SGSIS (& Wayne Linneberg).
Dr. Ron Goodman intro-
duced Signy Holm and Erik
Allan, two of the four children
who attended Icelandic Lan-
guage Camp in Gimli last July.
Ron also spoke briefly about the
economic crisis that Iceland is
currently experiencing and sug-
gested a collection to be taken up
during the party. Many people
were eager to contribute and in
a very short time $1,030.85 was
collected, to be distributed to the
INL-sponsored Icelandic charity
Maedrastyksnefnd, an organiza-
tion that provides food, clothing
and Christmas gifts throughout
Iceland.
The ever-popular Have you
seen the Jólasveinar? play, fea-
turing Gail O’Dwyer and her
mischievous elves, began the
entertainment portion of the pro-
gram. Soon to follow was the
singing of Icelandic and English
Carols around the Christmas tree
and the much-anticipated visit
from Santa and Mrs. Claus.
As the evening continued,
Kiss Karaoke provided a won-
derful variety of music for three
generations of partygoers to en-
joy dancing the night away. w w w.icelandic-goods.com
