The L-H Board is offering readers four opportunities to win $100.00 by telling
them what story makes them
most proud of their heritage.
Lögberg-Heimskringla,
Íslendingadagurinn and the New
Icelandic Heritage Museum
will co-sponsor radio station
CJNU 107.9 FM (www.cjnu.
ca) in Winnipeg for the month
of July. The aim is to showcase
the Icelandic community to both
Icelanders and non-Icelanders.
For the month of July, lead
ins to L-H, festival and museum
advertisements will inform lis-
teners about the history and
culture of Iceland and New
Iceland. Readers are invited to
provide lead ins to introduce an
ad for the Icelandic Festival, the
New Iceland Heritage Museum,
or Lögberg-Heimskringla. Each
of the three winners will receive
$100.00.
Some examples:
An Icelander, Leifur •
Eiríksson, discovered
America 500 years before
Columbus.
The Icelandic Sagas were •
written in Icelandic, before
Dante was born.
Iceland has the lowest •
homicide rate of all
developed countries.
The worst volcanic eruption •
in recorded history was
at Laki in Iceland. Lava
Plumes shot 1400 meters in
the air.
Two facts from Iceland’s •
Top 10 rating in the recent
OECD (Organization for
Economic Cooperation and
Development’s Better Life
Index: 97% of the Iceland
population expressed
extreme satisfaction with
their water quality, and
Iceland has less air pollutant
particles per cubic meter
than the OECD average.
There is one more way to
win $100.00.
There will be opportunities
to have people from our
community do up to three
interviews a day during week-
days throughout July.
Some possible examples:
1. Johann Sigurdson – Fara
Heim Expedition
2. Skuli Sigfusson – on his
father Sveinn and the building
of the Ice Roads
3. John K Samson – lyrics
and poems
Entrants need to submit the
story idea and the name of the
person best suited to tell it.
Entries should be emailed
to lh@lh-inc.ca or phoned into
the L-H toll free number, 1-866-

Sunshine, trees bursting in fresh green leaves, and the air filled with the aroma of
coffee, pancakes and sausages. It
was the first day of the summer
season at Historic Markerville
Creamery Museum and Kaffistofa.
142 tourists from surrounding
communities, campers from the
adjacent park and local folks lined
up for breakfast while Stephan
G. Stephansson Board members
cooked the breakfast with summer
staff doing the running for this and
that, serving coffee, and showing
off their new costumes of black
skirts or trousers with white shirts,
suspenders or aprons.
There were special events for
the opening day, the presentation of
the new barn being one of the most
sought after by adults and children.
Les Johnston was commended for
his creativity in “furnishing” the
barn with cows in their stanchions,
pigs in the corner, birds in the loft,
a milk separator in the corner, The
barn, built by a local craftsman
in Markerville, was the chosen
project of the annual Christmas
in Markerville and Cookie Walk
fundraiser last November. In case
the children thought that was all,
Les surprised them by bringing out
the Cream Can ride, and driving
the kids around the grounds and
hamlet.
Inside the museum, new
displays were showcased, my
favourite being the cheese curd
mill that our Operations Manager,
Brooke Henrikson, rescued from
storage, researched the details
of how it worked, and discovered
that it was older than the operation
of the first creamery – 1880 to be
exact. Other new displays included
Morkeberg’s attempt at cheese
making, Marion’s office corner, at-
home butter making and the G. E.
Johnson Store, all of these offering
a new dimension to the tour of the
Creamery.
By the time all this was taken
in, along with the visiting of
neighbours and friends, it was
time to stop by the Kaffistofa for
that delectable, tempting ice cream
cone that brings back many patrons
all summer long.

June 30 episode of “Farm Fresh”
featuring the Markerville area,
a great advertisement for our
programs and events.
