At the Seattle convention, participants agreed that INL executive meeting highlights should be provided to L-H and other outlets as a way
to keep the membership informed about activities,
programs, events and future plans. This information
can be shared freely via newsletter, email, discussion,
or on Club websites.
New Member Club:
Congratulations to Washington DC (currently a
provisional member of INL) on their intention to
become a full member in July.
Improving Communications:
A focus group of club leaders met at the Seattle
Convention to discuss strengths and weaknesses in
the relationship between the INL of NA and local
clubs. Improving communications was a top priority.
As a result, several new actions have begun: reporting
monthly INL of NA meetings, exploring improvements
to the website, updating the INL of NA PowerPoint
presentation, creating a short video for the website,
and exploring the role of a Communications Director
position.
Future Conventions:
In analysing the recent successful Seattle convention
and the upcoming Winnipeg convention, we began a
preliminary examination of convention costs and how
to fund them.
2015 Convention:
Bev Arason-Gaudet said, “I have been in discussion
with the Icelandic American Association in Minnesota
and they have been talking with their members about
the possibility of hosting an INL of NA Convention
in the future. They have begun thoughtful, thorough
discussions, have organized a Convention com-mittee
and have started to look at venues and dates. At this
time, they would like to let the INL of NA Board
know that they are prepared to pursue the hosting
responsibility for the INL of NA Convention in 2015.
Snorri West:
2013 is set to go, with four young women visiting
Calgary, Markerville, Edmonton, Saskatoon,
Vatnabyggð, Winnipeg, Gimli, the Interlake,
Íslendingadagurinn, and August the Deuce in North
Dakota. New pledges of $200 from the Toronto club
and $500 from the Edmonton club were announced.
The 2014 program will visit an eastern corridor, with
Toronto. Washington DC and L’Anse Aux Meadows
in Newfoundland confirmed so far.
Iceland Scholarship Winner:
This year two applications were submitted for
consideration and Matthew Fitzsimmons, of
Campbell River, BC was successful and will
receive (approx.) $1,200 (CDN) per month, plus
tuition fees. There were 104 applications for only
18 available scholarships. This is an important and
generous scholarship; please encourage students to
apply next year.
INL of NA executive meeting highlights
Following last year’s successful restarting by INL of NA of the Snorri West Program, which visited Minnesota, North Dakota, Winnipeg, Gimli and
the Interlake area of Manitoba, this year four young
women will be visiting North America.
The four participants, Þorbjörg Ída Ívarsdóttir,
Svandís Einarsdóttir, Gerður Gautsdóttir and Hulda
Lilja Hannesdóttir, will be touring from July 10 until
August 7 to Calgary, Markerville and Edmonton
in Alberta, Saskatoon and the Vatnabyggð area in
Saskatchewan, and Winnipeg, Gimli and the Interlake
in Manitoba, with a foray into North Dakota to attend
August the Deuce celebrations.
They all have relatives in North America and we are
in the process of finding them, so they have a chance to
meet one another. We are also looking for host families
right now, so interested people who would like to have
a vibrant young woman or two in their house for a
few days can get in touch with your local club or the
overall co-ordinator Sarah Isliefson (snorriwestna@
yahooo.com) and let her know. There are also other
opportunities to help out with their tour, and, of course,
the program always need help with funding.
The INL of NA feels that this is an important way
to strengthen the bonds between modern Iceland and
North America, as well as to introduce these young
people to the history and culture of the settlement
period.
The Snorri West organizers recognize Ásta Sol
Kristjansdóttir for her help with the program, the
program sponsors, Icelandair and the Icelandic Festival
of Manitoba, and clubs in Calgary, Markerville,
Edmonton, Vatnabyggð, Winnipeg, Gimli and Toronto.
