From 90 to 8,000 for August the Deuce
Jón Hákon Magnússon, founder and former general manager of KOM Public Relations and
editor-in-chief of INB until this year,
died in the Department of Oncology,
Haematology and Palliative Care at
National University Hospital on July
18. He was 72 years old. He received a
BA in Political Science and Journalism
in 1964 from Macalester College,
St. Paul, Minnesota, USA. After
completing his studies, he worked as
a journalist in Iceland and the US. He
was office manager for Biafran Airlift
during the war there. In 1974 he served
as press representative for the 1100th
Anniversary of Iceland's Settlement. In
1986 he saw to the running of the Media
Centre in connection with the Reagan-
Gorbachev Summit in Iceland. He was
a news broadcaster for State Television
(RUV) 1970-1979 and general manager
of KOM ehf. 1986-2013. Magnússon
founded Iceland News Briefs in 1994.
Jón Hákon Magnússon was
also a strong supporter of Lögberg-
Heimskringla. On September 1, 2011,
we announced that we had been offered
a complimentary subscription to INB,
Iceland News Briefs, a translated
summary of news from Iceland. INB,
created by KOM, is a subscription-
based ezine that goes to 40 foreign
embassies, EU, banks, businesses and
honourary Consuls of Iceland all over
the world. “I hope you are pleased with
getting the INB and I also hope that it
will give your readers a better inside
look into Iceland affairs,” Jón Hákon
said at that time. He also facilitated an
effective working relationship between
L-H and the American ambassador in
Iceland and even wrote articles for
L-H, including “The Apple-Scented
Holidays,” his Christmas story in the
December 1, 2011 issue.

L-H marks the passing of a good friend
Mountain ND, where the population of 90 plays host and hostess to 8,000 visitors over the five-day August the Deuce
weekend. The aerial shot taken August 2 tells the story – vehicles tucked into every available space, except along the parade
route as the floats make their way from behind the Mountain Community Center (large building, dark roof, right-hand side
of photo), up the street past the Vikur Church (to the left of the Community Center), and on around town, the first event in
a day packed with displays, activities, food, a formal program and ample time for visiting.
