In the October 1st issue of Lögberg-Heimskringla, Joe Martin introduced readers to an exhibit currently on display at the National Museum of Iceland featuring Icelandic Canadians
who served in World War I. In his article, Joe told the story of
his uncle, Jon (John) Einarsson, who was the first Canadian-born
member of his family and who gave his life for his country during
the Battle of Passchendaele in 1917.
Two of Jon Einarsson’s brothers, Johannes (Joe) and Vilhjalmur
(Villi), also served in the Canadian Army during the war. Their
sister Margaret, the second girl and second youngest of the family,
lovingly preserved pictures and record books to commemorate her
brothers’ service. We are pleased to present some of those images
here in honour of the Einarsson brothers and in honour of all those
who served. The short but poignant entries in Villi’s diary note
both the great events of wartime history – “I went to Vimy Ridge”
– and the pain of brotherhood – “Saw John my brother’s name in
the casualty list.”
