I. GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Position — formation of Æðey.
Æðey lies toward the seaward end of the ísafjarðar-
djúp up beside the Snæfjalla-strand. The sound between
the northern end of the island and the mainland is only
about i/o kilom. in width but there is another small islet
in it. Southwards from Æðey across the Djúp to Ögur-
hólmi is just under 5 kilom. The island itself is fairly long
from north to south, about 2230 m, but the width is much
less, from 500 to 1,000 m. The island lies at Lat. 66°6' N.
Physical features.
The surface of the island is very uneven, consisting of
oval and often almost circular mounds divided by marshy
hollows. On the whole it is higher on the west side which
ends at the sea in an almost unbroken cliff, whereas at the
east side there are gently sloping grassy banks. The highest
point on the island is at the north end and is called Stóra-
horg (34 m); the highest point in the south end is Kríu-
