rounding Iceland. Detail is presently being added to the gravity map
of Iceland, in particular in the central highlands. Correcting for
variations in crustal structure would then give an improved picture
of the possible density variations in the upper mantle and might lead
to a better understanding of the large scale processes taking place
beneath the volcanic zone of Iceland.
Deep-drilling to study the nature of layer 3 under Iceland ap-
pears to be perfectly feasible at the present state of knowledge. Several
areas appear promising for this purpose, e.g. the western Iceland
area and the Snaefellsnes area.

Icelandic National Energy Authority, Department of Natural Heat. The author
