VISIT OUR WEBSITE WWW.LH-INC.CA 4 • Lögberg-Heimskringla • September 15 2018 The devastating fire that recently destroyed the National Museum of Brazil in Rio de Janeiro should serve as a warning to museums and archives everywhere, and inspire action on the part people who believe it’s important to properly preserve the records and heirlooms of the past. It is simply impossible to calculate the loss from this particular fire, which destroyed artifacts that were genuinely unique – many of them thousands of years old and irreplaceable. In Winnipeg, the city archives is presently being housed in an old warehouse. According to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, “The city's archival collection houses municipal and privately donated documents dating back to 1873, and is valued at more than $4 million for insurance purposes, according to the City of Winnipeg Archives' annual report for 2017.” However, the simple truth is that the collection isn’t worth that much – it’s actually priceless. If its contents were lost, they would be lost forever. As local historian Christian Cassidy said to the CBC, “I think it’s important to note that if something happens to these materials because they’re not being stored properly, that's it. You don’t get to recreate them.” The city’s archives were to be housed in the old Carnegie Library on William Avenue, which was being restored in 2013 when its roof was damaged in a heavy rainstorm. If the work had been completed, it would have been a double win – the restoration of a historically significant building and a state- of-the-art home for the archives within it. Archives and museums are under threat everywhere, and it’s not just the elements that make them vulnerable – these places simply aren’t priorities for most governments and educational institutions. More often than not, policy-makers view them as little more than storage closets rather than the treasure chests of history and culture that they are. Their funding is more often an afterthought than a priority. Digitization has helped to preserve documentary history and make records and manuscripts more available. Iceland’s timarit.is and handrit.is are noteworthy examples of digital repositories. But governments, universities, and other public institutions should not be cutting their library and archives budgets because records are being digitized and people are reading ebooks. It’s still important to keep tangible copies – paper and papyrus, parchment and vellum – and the volume will only grow. Digitization increases availability and speeds access, it doesn’t obviate the need to keep hard copies. Iceland stands out as a country that considers expenditures on museums and archives to be an investment in cultural awareness and under- standing. Iceland’s national museum, regional museums, libraries, and network of heritage sites are as central to the country’s identity as its magnificent natural wonders. When it comes to conserving its historical treasures, Iceland is a model for the rest of the world. On Friday, November 9, 2018, Lögberg- Heimskringla is hosting a Ljósanótt – An Evening of Lights – to recognize the contributions of past presidents, past directors, former editors, and one of our senior subscription sponsors. We invite you to join us for this celebration. No matter the role they played or the position they held, our honorees made a great contribution to the longevity to our paper. The Ljósanótt will be held at the Holiday Inn South, 1330 Pembina Highway, in Winnipeg. Tickets for the dinner are $90, which includes a $35 tax receipt. Arrangements have been made with the hotel for rooms for people who come in from out of town for that night. We have Gudlite Entertainent providing music for the evening and the dance floor will be ready. In 2019, we will be celebrating the 60th anniversary of the amalgamation of the Heimskringla and Lögberg. Perhaps we could party like it’s 1959 to bring in this milestone. Many of our honorees will be attending the Ljósanótt. Some of our honorees will be recognized in memory, but we have many family members who will be attending the gala in their place. Others may not be able to attend because they live in other parts of the country – and one lives in Iceland. Join us in honouring some of the leading lights of the Icelandic community on November 9.
