On a recent visit to
Newport, Rhode
Island, I visited
the Touro Tower. Once
believed to be a Viking
structure, that theory has
long since been debunked.
The current belief is that
this is the remains of an
old windmill. Research
seems to be showing that
it was built in the 15th
century, destroyed in the
16th century, and rebuilt
in the 17th century.
Having been to
Iceland and Norway, I
don’t recall seeing any
structure like this before,
so it does make me
wonder where the Viking
theory came from. Were
Norse known for round
structures like this or was
it Rhode Island’s attempt
to rival Newfoundland in
Norse settlement?
