It’s still the ’70s for some.
Below: the huldufólk rock at the Point suggests that the
original Icelandic settlers may not have come on their own.An wide trail has been cut through Lily Point.
Stefan Jonasson
Point Roberts, Washington,
is a charming enclave that’s
a favourite of geographical
trivia buffs. Just under five square
miles in size, with a population
of a little more 1,300 according
to the last United States census,
Point Roberts has the feel of
an island since the side of the
peninsula that’s connected to
the mainland is traversed by the
international border between the
U.S. and Canada.
When I was a boy, my family
would travel across the prairies
and through the mountains by
train to visit my grandparents,
who lived on a farm at Point
Roberts overlooking the Strait
of Georgia. The Point was more
magical than Disneyland in my
childhood imagination and, truth
be told, nothing has changed in
that regard – it’s still a wonderful
place, and its sights and smells
carry me back to my younger
years. I recently returned while on
business in Vancouver, slipping
across the border to spend a
Saturday at the Point in between
meetings.
My step-grandfather, Jonas
Thorstenson, was the son of
Icelandic pioneers who claimed
land at Point Roberts in the 1890s.
In fact, the Point’s Icelandic
history only adds to the delight of
trivia collectors – but it’s no trivial
matter. Like folks at Blaine, on
the other side of Boundary Bay,
many residents at the Point are
proud of their Icelandic heritage.
It was a thrill to visit the
Point for a day, after many years,
stopping by to see my dad’s
step-sister, Joan Linde, in my
grandparents’ old home and then
wandering around the familiar
places of my youth. Point Roberts
has escaped the unrelenting
suburban development just across
the border in Tsawwassen. It’s
still a place of fields and forests
overlooking the sea, punctuated
by clusters of homes and cottages,
where life unfolds at a human
pace and magic awaits those
prepared to linger awhile.
