Whenever I think
of the enormous
contribution that
volunteers make to the
betterment of society and the
world, my mind drifts towards
Walt Whitman’s ode to the
settlers of the American West,
“Pioneers! O pioneers!” and
I find myself substituting
“Volunteers! O volunteers!”
Now, there’s much in the poem
that makes we wince, I’ll
confess, but the urge to sing the
praises of those who volunteer is
as powerful in me as Whitman’s
urge to celebrate the pioneers.
While the wheels of
industry and commerce churn
out the bulk of the goods
and services we consume,
producing wages and profits in
the process, much of what we
value most is actually the work
of volunteers – individuals
who devote themselves to
creating, building, and serving
institutions that are vital to our
existence but impossible to
sustain on a commercial basis.
While others work for pay or
profit – and all of us must do
so in order to feed and shelter
ourselves – volunteers work
for the love of something
they value, the satisfaction of
creating something beyond
themselves, or a desire to
serve the needs of others.
They typically do so without
any expectation of reward and
those of us who benefit from
their efforts don’t express our
gratitude often enough.
This year, Ljósanótt,
an evening of lights, will
honour some of the volunteers
who have helped to sustain
Lögberg-Heimskringla over the
past couple of decades – board
members and sponsors, some
of whom are no longer with
us. Yes, we will be honouring
former editors at the same
time, and they weren’t exactly
volunteers – but they weren’t
getting rich, either. Truth be
told, our former editors all
contributed countless hours
over and above the time for
which they were paid so
meagrely. It’s not possible to
produce a polished publication
on a shoestring budget without
a lot of volunteer effort.
The individuals being
honoured by this year’s
Ljósanótt are representative
of many more volunteers
who won’t be recognized this
time, but whose efforts are
nevertheless deeply appreciated
and vital to our success – current
board members (including
some who only recently
retired), event volunteers,
committee members, authors
and photographers, generous
donors, quiet advocates,
and countless others. Each
contributes a bit and every
single one of them makes a
difference. It is impossible
to adequately express our
gratitude for the work of so
many hands and hearts.
Of course, there are many
institutions in the Icelandic
community that need the help
of volunteers: our local clubs,
the Icelandic National League
of North America, Icelandic
Roots, the Icelandic Festival
of Manitoba, the Deuce of
August, the New Iceland
Heritage Museum, Icelandic
River Heritage Sites, the Jon
Sigurdsson Chapter IODE,
and many other organizations
and activities that preserve the
Icelandic heritage and promote
interest in all things Icelandic.
Then there are the many
churches, social agencies,
educational institutions, athletic
teams, cultural organizations,
museums, historical societies,
scholarship foundations, and
other entities that are sustained
by the work of volunteers.
We contribute where we can
and we all benefit from the
collective result.
Volunteers! O volunteers!
We sing your praises, we give
our thanks, and we continue to
ask for your help.

Our annual general meeting for Lögberg-
Heimskringla took place in Winnipeg
on October 18, 2018. The board has
new members and a new executive.
The executive members are:
President: Alicyn Goodman, Winnipeg, MB
Vice President: Gunnvör Asmundsson,
Gimli, MB
Treasurer: Shawn Bjornsson, Winnipeg, MB
Secretary: Judy Richardson, Arborg, MB
Board members re-elected for the coming year:
Bruce Eyford, Winnipeg, MB
Erna Pomrenke, Manassas, VA
Margaret Amirault, Vancouver, BC
Claire Eckley, Inver Grove Heights, MN
Oskar Sigvaldason, Niagara-on-the-Lake, ON
The four new directors on the board are:
Fred Bjarnason, Victoria, BC
Natalie Guttormson, Kinistino, SK
Dianne O’Konski, Lakeville, MN
Kendra Jonasson, Winnipeg, MB
Peter Johnson retired as our chair this
year and Dan Snidal stepped down as our
treasurer. Robbie Rousseau did not stand for
re-election to the board and Oskar Sigvaldason
resigned following the annual meeting. During
the past year, we suffered the sad loss of Jon
Thordarson, who passed away, and Margaret
Kernested resigned after many years of service.
We thank Peter and Dan for their exceptional
dedication to the paper over a number of years
and the other board members for their service
in many areas. Watch for articles about
each of the new directors in future issues of
Lögberg-Heimskringla.
