Are You Ready, Madame
President? was on exhibition
at the Akureyri Museum when
we arrived in the gem of
Eyjafjörður, co-sponsored by
Iceland’s Museum of Design
and Applied Art. Since it was
a church group, I had hoped
to take this flock to the home
of Rev. Matthías Jochumsson
and the childhood home of
Rev. Jón Sveinsson, better
known as the children’s author,
Nonni, but both of these places
were closed. So we went to
the Akureyri Museum in order
to help me buy time while I
figured out where we could
go to fill the day. We ended
up spending the rest of the
afternoon right there.
When we entered the
exhibit hall where President
Vigdís’s dresses were on
display, one member of the
group snarled that the whole
exhibition seemed rather sexist
to her. “They wouldn’t put
on an exhibition of clothes
if she had been a man,” this
person said – not without
some justification. Although
she would later show intense
interest in the textile museum
when we stopped there, she
briskly moved through the hall
before heading on to see the
museum’s permanent exhibits
downstairs. The rest of the
group settled in to watch the
video about Vigdís and her
presidency.
