68 A T L A N T I C A i-site ARTEFACTS❍ The works of Hansína Jensdóttir have gained recog- nition for their bold finish and style. Hansína’s father, the renowned artist Jens Gudjónsson, has influenced her work, but Hansína has certainly devel- oped her own personal style, both in her creation of jewellery and sculptures – each piece has its own character. What differentiates Hansína’s jewellery The Djúpivogur Cultural Centre, on the tip of Berufjördur (East Fjords), is located in one of the town’s oldest build- ings, called Langabúd. This is one of the most important stops a visitor to the East Fjords should make to gain a sense of the region’s heritage. There are some very intricate and beautifully crafted pieces in the cultural centre’s collection, including sculp- tures and woodcarvings by prolific artist, Ríkardur Jónsson. The significance of Ríkardur Jónsson’s work is well appreciated by the artistic community in Iceland and some of his works can be found in the National Museum of Iceland’s collection. However, the Djúpivogur Cultural Centre has by far the largest and most informative exhib- it dedicated to this artist. The central part of the building holds an interesting col- lection of artefacts dedicated to the memory of Eysteinn Jónsson, a well known and respected politician in his time who was born in Djúpivogur. Eysteinn Jónsson is one of the longest serving politicians in Icelandic history and his career spanned the most transforming period in the nation’s history, during which Iceland became a modern and technologically adapted society. It is well worth a visit to his memorial collection. A women’s workshop is located on the premises and this handicraft workshop produces some charming souvenirs. Add to that the fact that the centre also has a coffee shop, and you could easily spend an interesting afternoon there. JMcC The Djúpivogur Cultural Centre, tel. (+354) 478-8220. Eastern Culture Art of Gold from others is the “raw and almost reckless style, a method of improvis- ing that allows her artistic abilities free reign,” say her admirers. You can find examples of Hansína’s craft at Gullsmidja Hansínu Jens, a boutique located in downtown Reykjavík. Gullsmidja Hansínu Jens, Laugavegur 20b, 101 Reykjavík, tel. (+354) 551-8448.
