Pubbing and clubbing in Reykjavík has never looked so good. The good old watering holes, Kaffibarinn in
particular, are still going strong, but there are some relative newcomers to the scene too that are well worth
a look-in, like Sirkus, and the only way to see if the bar stool fits is to take a wander and see where suits.
Liberal opening hours (we’re talkin’ all night long for some pubs) mean that the pressure is far from on. You
can take your time, see who you meet on the way, and remember, if you don’t have much stamina for the
traditional ‘crawl’, most bars serve up decent coffee and have a selection of teas that should keep you walk-
ing in a straight line. So, cheers, or “skál” as we say here.

The Big Top
Sirkus has changed hands since it first
opened, and is no longer a wine bar. It
is still a popular hang-out though, with
its colourful mishmash interior, pinball
machine, and now, basketball court
out the back. Go here to spot the
young and the restless. If you’re rest-
less yourself, they have balls behind
the bar (basketballs that is) and you
can impress the girls with your drib-
bling. JMcC
