GERMANY Iceland play the World Cup’s beaten finalists Germany at Laugardalsvöllur stadium in Reykjavík. The game is a part of the qualifications for the European Championship in football, which will be staged in Portugal, 2004. 7 TO 13 SEPTEMBER LITERARY FESTIVAL IN THE NORDIC HOUSE AND IDNÓ THEATRE The sixth annual Literary Festival to be held in Reykjavík hosts almost 30 authors from 17 countries. The guest list is both diverse and impressive with names such as José Saramango, Yann Martel (winner of the Booker Prize in 2002), and Hanif Kureishi. www.nordice.is 13 SEPTEMBER TO 26 OCTOBER VIEWPOINT SPESSI AND SARA AT THE NATIONAL GALLERY Icelandic photographer Spessi exhibits photographs and an installa- tion from 2003 of popular tourist spots seen in his own, unique way. Artist Sara Björnsdóttir will be pre- senting an installation made espe- cially for the National Gallery space using video technology to influence the viewer in a new and different manner. 15 TO 19 OCTOBER ICELAND AIRWAVES This energetic music festival is becoming Europe’s hottest rock event. Referred to as “probably one of the best musical experiences of my life” by Elektra Records director Leigh Lust, Iceland Airwaves will continue to deliver the best weekend away in Europe. Over the years Airwaves has inspired amazing per- formances from international artists like The Rapture, Fat Boy Slim and The Flaming Lips, as well as many of the maverick home-grown bands. This year promises to pack a punch with: Icelandic groovers Jaguar, Apparat Organ Quartet and Trabant; rock bands Singapore Sling, Mínus and Vinyl; and Aaron Carl, IJ Catling and Stefan Prescott will join hands with Tommi White and Blake to throw a New Icon/Dance Tracks party. The festival has taken place for a week at a time with a multitude of performers and spec- tators. The programme consists of music, design, fashion, photography, paintings and theatre, and reflects the major current trends in young people’s art.
