In a nation that loves its pastries almost as
much as it loves its coffee, stopping into a cor-
ner bakery may be the nicest thing you do for
yourself while in Iceland. Here’s a beginner’s
guide to those wonderlands of sugar and butter.
KÓKÓSKÚLA – The infamous and delicious ball of leftover cake scraps imbued with rum and rolled in cocoa and coconut. Rumour has it you can judge a bakery
by its kókóskúlur. SNÚDUR – An Icelandic sweet bun flavoured with cinnamon and loads of pink, chocolate, or white icing. Kids love 'em. VÍNARBRAUD – A typ-
ical Danish pasty with a custard centre and marzipan hidden in its flaky layers. Even the most passionate nationalists like their vinarbraud now and then. KLEINA
– The secret to Iceland’s donut is the cardamom in its dough. Though it's not sugary like an American donut, it’s also best dipped in a nice cup of coffee. TEBOLLA
– Think individual pound cake, but lighter. Available with chocolate chips, raisins, or both. Enjoy with afternoon coffee or, as the name implies, tea.
