86 Icelandair is proud to sponsor the first annual conference on renewable energy for vehicles in Reykjavík, on 17-18 September. Iceland is a global leader in renewable energy with 72 percent of its total energy consumption from hydro- and geother- mal sources. Nearly all of Iceland’s houses are heated with renewable energy and nearly 100 percent of the electricity in the country is generated from renewable sources. Among those participating in the conference are Dr. Ulf Bossel from the European Fuel Cell Forum; Per Carstedt, CEO SEKAB, Chairman Bio Alcohol Fuel Foundation (BAFF); Jan Brentebraten, Director, Alternative Fuel Vehicles Strategy, Marketing and Sales, Ford of Europe; Baldur Elíasson, Former Head of ABB's Energy and Global Change Program; Jón Björn Skúlason, General Manager, Icelandic New Energy; Gustaf Landahl, Director, Clean Vehicles Stockholm; Björn H. Halldórsson, Managing Director, Metan Biogas; Professor Thorsteinn I. Sigfússon, Head of Iceland Innovation Institute and recipient of the Global Energy International Award 2007; and Felix Kramer, CEO of California Cars Initiative. The majority of the country’s 190,000 vehicles are in the capital area, mak- ing Reykjavík the ideal test market for transforming the vehicle fleet to run on renewable energy. Icelandair is pleased to be associated with this event that joins international energy experts, visionaries, policy makers and financiers to help shape the future of renewable energy for vehicles through a powerful exchange of views in this unique setting. driving.is Running For a Cause Icelandair is proud to have been one of the main sponsors of the 2007 Reykjavík Marathon, which was held for the 24th time on 18 August. The annual run starts in the center of Reykjavík and kicks off the Reykjavík Culture Night celebrations with four dif- ferent competitions: 3 km (approx. 2 miles), 10 km (approx. 6 miles), 21 km (approx. 13 miles) and a full 42 km marathon (approx. 26 miles). This year Icelandair Group encouraged its staff to participate in the marathon and to support a good cause at the same time. Employees from all the Icelandair Group companies were invited to participate for free and a contribution to the Special Children Travel Fund was made on their behalf. Icelandair Group employees responded very well and a large proportion of the staff took part. It was a great event, in support of a good cause. You can donate to the Special Children Travel Fund either online or on-board Icelandair aircraft. A total of 24 teams from around the world participated. Icelandair’s team members came from five different sales offices—Reykjavík, Copenhagen, London, Amsterdam and Frankfurt. The captain of the Icelandair team, Einar Páll Tómasson, General Manager Central Europe, was delighted with the result: "This is a great achievement! It is very good to win third place in the airlines’ world championship, especially since the team had never played together before and we were not in the best shape physically. We have proven that exhaustion and pain are merely a state of mind and now our goal is to get in better shape and take first place next year." The winner of the tournament was Emirates, to whom Icelandair lost in the quarterfinals.
