It covers approximately eight percent of the area of Iceland. The average thick- ness of the ice cap is 400 meters, although it can reach a kilometer in depth at its thickest. The oldest section of the glacier is its base—the ice there was created through precipitation that fell some 800 years ago, around 1200 AD. The glacier can be hiked onto in many places, which is a tremendous adventure; however, caution is advised since there are deep crevices throughout. Vatnajökull glacier is only some 300 km from Kef lavík International Airport. Have a great journey to the east—and be careful! PS
