I guess I was inspired by this pair of old, green fishnet balls I remember hang- ing in my grandparents’ living room,” says Elín Hrund Thorgeirsdóttir of her handmade crocheted necklaces and bracelets she calls Dýrindi. “The name means precious in Icelandic, something you hold dear. I also like the fact that Dýrindi includes two words: dýr, which also means animal, and yndi which means something lovely and precious.” The one-off pieces are made from fine cotton yarn in all kinds of colors, covering different-sized plastic beads. “There has been a certain evolution in my designs. I love working with colors and creating new palettes. It is a great outlet for my creativity,” explains Thorgeirsdóttir, who studies fashion design at the Iceland Academy of Arts and has a background in journalism and publishing. “Some are inspired by trends of the moment whereas oth- ers are in classic colors. Each piece is different from the next, there is always something new.” Available at Kisan, Kraum, Mýrin, Hrím, Akureyri Museum and wornbyworship.com. DESIGNa TOGETHER WE MAKE THINGS HAPPEN
