Precious Pieces
“My mother and grandmother taught me how to crochet and knit at
an early age. Then two years ago I began developing my jewelry. I
guess I was inspired by this pair of old, green fishnet balls I remember hang-
ing in my grandparents’ living room,” says Elín Hrund Thorgeirsdóttir of her
handmade crocheted necklaces and bracelets she calls Dýrindi. “The name
means precious in Icelandic, something you hold dear. I also like the fact that
Dýrindi includes two words: dýr, which also means animal, and yndi which
means something lovely and precious.”
The one-off pieces are made from fine cotton yarn in all kinds of colors,
covering different-sized plastic beads. “There has been a certain evolution
in my designs. I love working with colors and creating new palettes. It is a
great outlet for my creativity,” explains Thorgeirsdóttir, who studies fashion
design at the Iceland Academy of Arts and has a background in journalism
and publishing. “Some are inspired by trends of the moment whereas oth-
ers are in classic colors. Each piece is different from the next, there is always
something new.”
