“I use netting yarn for my crocheted pieces as it is stronger and main-
tains the pieces’ shape better,” says Hildur Yeoman, who has gained
international renown for her feminine yet bold crocheted necklaces
embellished with ribbons and beads, as well as her handbags shaped like
swans and poodles [pictured on page 52]. “The delicate and refined animal
species were intended to make up for the yarn’s roughness,” she explains.
“It’s all about balance.”
With her latest collection entitled Cherry Bomb, which includes multi-
functional necklaces enabling individual expression, she has decidedly
changed her tune. “Working on my past collections, I was immersed in
a world of fairytale and mythology whereas this time I was inspired by
strong and rebellious female icons who refuse to be restrained by norms
of femininity. It is therefore edgier and has a punk element to it,” explains
Yeoman, who graduated as a fashion designer from the Iceland Academy
of Arts in 2006 and now teaches there.
Yeoman has also studied art and her vibrant and sensual illustrations
are coveted by art and design enthusiasts. “The essence of everything I do
is illustration; I always begin by sketching. Sometimes they evolve into an
accessory but at other times they end up as a decoration for somebody’s
wall. I love to experiment; to mix handicraft into my designs, to drape and
to embroider. To me, it is very important that old techniques don’t get lost
with time and technology.”
Available at KronKron, Mýrin and select London shops.
