The City of Reykjavík has been producing its Pure Energy brochure for many
years now. We call it Pure Energy because it highlights many of the activities,
sights and initiatives that make Iceland’s capital region such an exciting
place to live and visit.
On the following pages, you’ll learn about a new program of “Study Visits”,
designed to show visitors what makes the city work so well. You’ll also read
about our more established programs, like the Municipal Working School
scheme, operated by the Department of the Environment, or the launch of
parking fees paid online. There are several pages devoted to a selection of
Reykjavík’s best museums and galleries, and others that show you how to
relax and unwind in this energetic place.
The capital region isn’t just about Reykjavík. Seven communities make
up the area, and Pure Energy has information on each of the surrounding
towns and their different attractions. This includes the renowned Viking
festival in Hafnarfjördur, walking tours of Seltjarnarnes and a brand new
thermal pool in Mosfellsbaer.
The theme of this year’s brochure is “Energizing City”. Where does all
this energy come from? It could be literally, from the natural hot water that
emerges from the bowels of the earth to supply power and heat to the city.
It could also be figuratively, with the inspiration of the region’s stunning
natural beauty, hedged between the sea and the mountains, with glaciers
and volcanoes almost a stone’s throw away. But most likely it’s the people.
Locals take pride in their home and like to keep busy. From celebrating the
summer bright lights to watching incredible fireworks displays on New Year’s
Eve, there’s always some festival or celebration going on.
To get you started on building your energy, throughout these pages we’ve
included our suggestions for high-octane fun in the world’s northernmost
capital. From sampling our world famous hotdogs to taking a refreshing
walk along the sea coast to watching an up-and-coming musical act, the
Reykjavík Capital Area will keep you energized long beyond your stay here.
