Milking the Sun
Something to Write home About
Museum of Design and Applied Arts
7 June – 14 Oct 2012
this is Sólskin/Sunshine, a lamp in the shape of a milk bottle that collects
light from the sun. place it in your window and by afternoon, it has been
filled with sunlight and can be used as an ecologically friendly source
of light for up to eight hours at a time. this design marvel, by hrafnkell
Birgisson, Sesselja guðmundsdóttir, and aðalsteinn Stefánsson, is among
the pieces on display at a new exhibition at the Museum of design and
applied art. Spanning a decade of icelandic product design, “Something
to Write home about” demonstrates how this field, which is still in its
infancy, has grown and prospered at wondrous speed. the exhibition
features works by approximately fifty local designers, all of whom cleverly
combine aesthetics with function. in addition, it highlights ongoing
collaborative projects that emphasize innovative use of local materials and
build on traditional methods when shaping iceland’s future. ÁA
