On permanent display, open from 12 pm to 10 pm daily
the tvísöngur sound sculpture in seyðisfjörður, East iceland,
by the german artist lukas Kühne opened to the public in
early september. “the whole village turned up and they were
really happy. Kids even came with their guitars,” Kühne says
of the opening night. Built on the mountainside overlooking
the town, tvísöngur pays homage to the icelandic musical
tradition and works as a natural amplifier for a five-tone
harmony.
the hope is that the locals continue to use the facility, Kühne
says. “i was really happy that the community understood
that it is theirs. this town is going to produce quite a few
young pop stars,” he says enthusiastically. “the kids are not
annoying anyone there. they can practice all day—it’s open
24-hours a day.”
the project was realized in collaboration with skaftfell
Center for Visual art and is supported by the Municipality
of seyðisfjörður and the goethe-institut denmark, among
others. Kühne divides his time between Berlin and
Montevideo, uruguay. his artworks are dedicated to space
and frequency.
tvísöngur is open to the public from 12 pm to 10 pm daily
