IcEland In all Its sPlEndOUR
Erlend and Orsolya Haarberg
a new photo book by Erlend and orsolya haarberg from
trondheim in norway, IcEland In all Its sPlEndOUR
with texts by unnur Jökulsdóttir has just been released. this
is neither the first nor the last book on icelandic landscape,
but one of the better ones. its strength lies in the light. Bad
weather plays a big part in making the book both interesting
and different. the book isn’t only about landscapes, you can
also find happy foxes, lazy gannets, flying fulmars, sitting
ducks, a drowsy drake and a couple of arctic terns dancing
in the dark. the layout by anna Björnsdóttir is clean, unnur's
texts informative and the printing by oddi excellent. the book
succeeds in showing all the splendor of the republic of iceland.

iceLand airwaveS returnS to form
Reykjavík music festival
October 31 – november 4, 2012
iceland airwaves, running from october 31 to november 4, might
just be coming home this year. it could be said that the past couple
of years have been, well, below par. it could also be said that
airwaves had started to live off its formidable reputation. don’t
agree with me? think robyn, think sinéad o’Connor.
things improved last year, though, with Björk, and the inclusion
of Beach house. the very best of the icelandic music scene
combined with up-and-coming alternative acts from across the
globe. this year is a willful return to icelandic form, headlined by
superlative-inducing sigur rós, appearances by new folksters of
Monsters and Men, and perennial favorites gusgus and rökkurró.
those up-and-coming alternatives? try ghostpoet and django
django from the u.K., dirty projectors and phantogram from the
u.s., and a fair smattering of bands from other nordic countries.
i’m also intrigued by acts that have a strong icelandic influence
such as Cheek Mountain thief, the result of an Englishman moving
to iceland and falling in love.
as ever, the strength of airwaves lies in the icelandic musicians
who put on extraordinary performances. among others, sóley,
ólafur arnalds, samaris, sin Fang and snorri helgason are all going
to be special. they are after all, already at home. EH
