Culture Club
academy award winner and
Punk Legend in SurPriSe duet
Reykjavík cultuRe night 2012
Russell crowe and Patti smith
legendary songstress and ‘godmother of punk’ patti smith
delighted fans when she appeared, unannounced, not
once, but twice, on stage with australian oscar-winning
actor russell Crowe at this year’s reykjavík Culture night
festival in mid-august. smith joined Crowe—in iceland for
filming of scenes of darren aronofsky’s epic biblical tale
noah—and his good friend, Canadian actor and musician
alan doyle, on stage at two of the pair’s three performances
for a duet of one of her best known numbers, ‘Because
the night’, co-written with Bruce springsteen and released
in 1978. First at an outdoor garden party, where a large
crowd vying for a view of Crowe’s performance spread to
the upper floors of an indoor car park building in the heart
of reykjavík, and then at an intimate late-night gathering
at KEX hostel, smith, glorious as ever, left us with another
signature performance. and her visit to iceland was no
coincidence; smith will reportedly perform the title song of
noah, currently slated for release in 2014. ZR

tjörn by Farmers Market
“tjörn, the new woolen sweater by Farmers Market, is a must-
have this winter. in one size only, it’s big, warm and comfy, a
mixture of merino and angora wool. it comes in three different
colors—blue and white; brown and white; and dark brown
and gray—and has a very distinct pattern,” says Björg Marta
gunnarsdóttir, managing director of the new branch of the
geysir concept store, which opened in akureyri, north iceland,
last June. Carrying icelandic and foreign design, the store
proved a hot spot among tourists and locals during the fair
weather last summer, but may now become a shelter from the
blizzards that hit the region as early as september this year.
in order to stay warm in sub-zero temperatures and icy winds
this winter, Björg further recommends: woolen underwear from
Farmers Market, furs from Feldur, woolen capes, socks and
mittens designed by geysir, and woolen blankets from geysir
and Vík prjónsdóttir. ESA
