Iceland review - 2012, Side 32
30 ICELAND REVIEW melting Pot Words and Photos By Páll StEfánSSon Under our feet we hear the earth hiss, trans- forming the icy water of glacial streams into steaming springs. Colorful rocks glint amidst the snowdrift below Kerlingarfjöll mountains, and rays of light fall into the river below.  All the contrasts of the land we call Iceland can be found around the rim of Vatnajökull glacier. On Jökulsárlón, whole cities of ice- bergs sail, biding their time. Close by, you find the gentle woodlands of Skaftafell, within earshot of where the roaring torrent of Skeiðará river fans over the sand.  Or does it still?  Nature is ever-changing, and never more than this extraordinary summer. Warm and sunny weather caused the glaciers to fade away, faster and faster, much faster than predicted. Iceland truly is a melting pot. By the river Skaftá, one of uncountable rivers that originate in Vatnajökull glacier. Hasselblad 905SWC, 38mm, Velvia
