10 ICELAND REVIEW
the Freemasons’ building, Geirseyri, vestmannaeyjar
open 2-5 pm, Wednesdays through Sundays
until august 11, 2013
“When i caught them last year they sparkled like diamonds,”
says hulda hákon, one of iceland’s foremost visual artists, of
her wall relief of a school of silvery mackerel on display in her
exhibition Birds, Sea, House, people, Ship, Sunshine and Fish
in the freemasons’ building by the harbor of heimaey. outside
the window the bright red trawler Sigurður ve is docked, the
inspiration for another of hulda’s distinct artworks. Most of
the reliefs, sculptures and texts on display were created in her
studio on the island. huldahakon.com ESA

i WaS Here, a new book of photographs in small panoramic format by
photographer Kristján ingi einarsson, is just out, including close to 100 images
of iceland, mostly from the south. there’s only one photo from northwest
iceland, of the basalt rock formation of hvítserkur, and five from the eastern
part of the country. this is iceland in its colorful summer costume—there
are very few images from the other three seasons. the pictures are straight
forward; it almost feels like you’re in that place at the moment the picture
was taken. the book includes very few details and abstract images, though.
My favorite photo is a panoramic view of the waterfall selfoss in jökulsá á
fjöllum, northeast iceland. PS

Hundaholmi
Straight Stuff to go with very Serious pictures from
iceland and Food and Festivities are cute and curious
little books released by hundaholmi in 2013.
the first includes illustrations by piret uustal and
Karin Kurzmeyer of their observations of icelandic
society and culture while studying art in iceland. the
texts by hildur petersen and anna Bjarnadóttir are
intended to shed light on their observations and set
some facts straight.
the second book is the result of hildur and anna’s
love for traditions, cooking and taking photographs.
they provide readers with a calendar of icelandic
festivities, including amusing illustrations, fun facts
and recipes of new and old, savory and sweet
dishes. hundaholmi.is ESA

While on assignment in Vestmannaeyjar, i came across the new family-
run eatery slippurinn, a great new place for food lovers. its young
master chef, gísli Matthías auðunsson, competed in the nordic Chef
of the year 2012. the menu is a mix of traditional icelandic food with a
twist of the new nordic kitchen. PS
