The Blue & White Lagoon
One of the most iconic sights anywhere has to be the Jökulsár-
lón glacial lagoon in Southeast Iceland. Nowhere else can you
see huge chunks of glacial ice floating around alongside inquisitive
seals and ducks. The pristine white and crystal blue ice is streaked
with black memories of past volcanic eruptions.
Beyond the unlikely but impressive sight of a suspension bridge
over the ice, the iconic black sand beach is strewn with blocks of ice
and behind the lagoon; of course, Europe’s largest glacier, Vatna-
jökull, looms large.
Jökulsárlón is truly unique in the world, so stop by and explore
the informative visitor center, its gift shop and the excellent café.
And while you’re there you won’t be able to resist an unforget-
table boat ride, getting you close and personal with crystal clear
thousand-year-old ice, forming hauntingly beautiful natural sculp-
tures as it slowly melts into the sea. It’s an experience you won’t
