graph and enjoy the ever-changing nature,”
says photographer Geir Ólafsson, after
walking the trail for the first time since the
eruption that changed the top of the trail in
2010.
“and it’s very different from how it used
to be, with the new lava and the two craters.
But the start has not changed; with, what, 37
waterfalls, if i remember correctly; along the
first part of the route.”
The Fimmvörðuháls trail is divided into four
parts: the first is called fossaleið (‘the waterfall
way’), and is 7 km long. after the walking
bridge, there are two ways of tackling the sec-
ond part. one is to continue along the Skógá
Sandwiched between two glaciers is one of
Iceland’s most popular hiking routes: the 25-km
(15-mile) Fimmvörðuháls trail, from the waterfall
Skógafoss to the nature reserve of Þórsmörk.
