i ’m not the only one. at the campsite in Bakkafjörður, i
meet Joseph from Switzerland, sitting in his car in the
cold rain and fog, on his 25th trip to iceland. “of all of
iceland, i like langanes the most. Here at the northeast
corner, there is something unique, different.”
He was the sole guest at the campsite, next door to the
supermarket Mónakó, which is open two hours a day,
between 4 pm and 6 pm, five days a week. although, as
it says on the handwritten note in the store window, “in
need call 866 7813.”
Five-hundred-and-thirty-one people live in langanes-
byggð municipality: 70 on the few sheep farms, 84 in
the village of Bakkafjörður and 377 in the larger town
of Þórshöfn in Þistilfjörður. Þórshöfn is the gateway to
langanes, the peninsula that lies between the two fjords
Bakkafjörður and Þistilfjörður.
