On clear days, guests at Hótel Jökull in Nes, 7 km (4 miles)
from Höfn, wake up to arguably one of the most awesome
views in the country—if not the continent—of the massive white
outlet glaciers of Vatnajökull, the largest glacier in Europe.
Operated by a small, family-run company, Hótel Jökull was
originally a boarding school in winter and a hotel in summer. The
school was bought by a local family in 2008, who, in spite of not
having any prior experience of the hotel business, have worked
on its renovation ever since. Hótel Jökull opened up under its
current name last year, and has developed from having 31 rooms
and sleeping bag accommodation to 41 rooms with bath, and 17
with a washbasin.
