A fixed event on the calendar of film buffs is the Reykjavík
International Film Festival (RIFF), screening a wide range
of drama and non-fiction films from more than 40 coun-
tries. Apart from the usual theaters, previous venues have
included a swimming pool and a cave. The goal of RIFF is to
highlight independent filmmaking—especially the work of
up-and-coming filmmakers—and to encourage interaction
between genres with concerts and other events. This year’s
guests of honor will be Alejandro Jodorowsky and Darren
Aronofsky.

From its humble beginnings in an airport hangar, Iceland
Airwaves has grown into the country’s largest music festival,
with hundreds of Icelandic and international acts playing
on and off-venue concerts. Headlined by PJ Harvey, the
2016 edition will also feature Bedroom Community’s 10th
anniversary shows. The lineup includes Santigold, Mabel,
Margaret Glaspy, Of Monsters and Men, múm, Kronos
Quartet and Warpaint.

Founded in 1888, Nordic Music Days is one of the old-
est music festivals in the world. Rotating between the
Nordic countries, the festival will be hosted in Reykjavík
this year. Leading ensembles and soloists from the
region, including Berglind María Tómasdóttir, Håkon
Stene and Scenatet, will perform pioneering contempo-
rary music. The Nordic Music Days Pavilion will serve
as a platform for lectures, panels, workshops and more.
