in that they appear to depict not just
another world, but a place outside of any
world. If you could photograph the frag-
ments that remain in your mind upon
awakening from REM sleep, they might
look something like this.
Shu Yi is currently working as a graphic
designer and taking photographs in her
spare time. Whatever photography’s offi-
cial status in her life, she says there’s little
chance that she will quit. Photography
is “how I understand the world,” she
says; noting that, as she moves through
everyday life, she is always composing
photographs in her head.
Although Shu Yi has traveled around
the country several times, she doesn’t feel
that her work in Iceland is finished. For
her, living in the country has a spirit-lift-
ing effect. “Whenever I’m at home [in
Beijing] I just keep dreaming about com-
ing back.” With luck, she will renew her
visa, and continue working on both pho-
tography and graphic design projects in
Iceland. “You understand yourself much
better when you’re here,” she says. u
