98 ICELAND REVIEW
S P E C I A L P R O M O T I O N
Highlighting the attractions of the three West Nordic
nations, the Faroe Islands, Iceland and Greenland, the
Vestnorden Travel Mart (VNTM) is the most important
business-to-business trade show in the North Atlantic region.
VNTM’s goal is to establish new travel trade opportunities, as
well as reinforcing relationships between the key players in
tourism in the three destinations and presenting new natural,
cultural and adventure experiences.
THE GREAT OUTDOORS
Of the three West Nordic neighbors, Iceland has the largest
population (330,000 people), who live mostly along the coast
of the 103,000 km2 (40,000 sq mile) sub-Arctic island. With its
active volcanoes and countless waterfalls, Iceland is popular
among people who like the great outdoors. Tourism is current-

ly booming, so travelers seeking solitude in nature should look
for off-the-path destinations or visit in the off-season. Consider
visiting places such as the colorful highlands at Kerlingarfjöll
and the amazing waterfall trail along Jökulsá in Fljótsdalur,
East Iceland. The West Fjords and East Fjords have an array
of charming fishing towns and villages with exciting activities
for visitors. Surprises lie around every bend on the road: how
about watching the starry winter skies and northern lights while
floating in an exclusive pool at Laugar, Reykjadalur, North Ice-
land, for example?
SPARKLING GEMSTONES
The Faroe Islands are like sparkling green gemstones in the
middle of the North Atlantic Ocean. Approximately 50,000
people live on the 18 islands of a combined size of 1,399 km2
