The Handknitting Association of Iceland sells
quality woolen goods in the heart of Reykjavík.
The lopapeysa sweater, with its classic patterns and
circular yoke, has become a favorite souvenir among
travelers to Iceland. The sweater uses wool from Iceland’s
hardy sheep, with its naturally soft, insulating and water-re-
sistant fibers. The Handknitting Association of Iceland
(Handprjónasamband Íslands) is a collective of Icelanders
that knit and sell sweaters, scarves, shawls, hats, mittens
and other quality woolen goods. There are a lot of colors
and patterns to choose from, in an array of sizes.
Situated on Skólavörðustígur in downtown Reykjavík,
the Handknitting Association offers a wide selection of
knitted clothing and accessories; as well as yarn and other
knitting products like needles, buttons and patterns.
LONG HISTORY
The Handknitting Association was founded in 1977 by
hundreds of Icelanders who supported their income by
knitting woolen goods. By founding the association, the
knitters took the sale of their goods into their own hands.
Today, around 300-400 hobby knitters are members of the
association, and travelers can buy directly from the people
who knit the sweaters in Iceland; instead of purchasing im-
ported goods.
The flagship shop is on Skólavörðustígur 19, and there
are satellite stores at Laugavegur 53b and at the Radisson
Blu Saga Hotel. If you are looking for an authentic, tradi-
tional Icelandic sweater, made in Iceland, this is your place.
