Healing hot water in Hveragerði, huts in
Hólmavík, and views of the mighty Vatnajökull
glacier—a white, black and blue world. There’s
nothing like a glacier to make man seem tiny, the
land huge and the weather savage. The crevasses
lurk beneath the sleek white surface, where
slumbering volcanoes gather strength for future
catastrophes. Many of the contrasts of the land
we call Iceland can be found around the rim of
Vatnajökull glacier.
In this issue, we also visit the Strandir region in
the West Fjords for three separate pieces. Survival
there has always been a battle, tempering the
people until they are as strong and individual as
the land itself. One of our landscape series is
dedicated to Árneshreppur (page 92), the
northernmost part of the region. We also take a
look back to the 17th century and the terrible
witch hunt (page 64) which started in Strandir, a
dramatic chapter in our history. The final piece is
the aforementioned visit to the fishing huts in
Hólmavík (page 6), the village where half of the
800-strong population of Strandir lives today.
From first-time visitor, US photographer/writer
Jason Visco, we have the story of his memorable
stay in Iceland (page 36).
And there is more in this issue, too: Eygló Svala
Arnarsdóttir visits Viðey, a small island rich in
history, just a few hundred meters north of the capital
(page 46), while Zoë Robert quizzes musician Logi
Pedro Stefánsson (page 14) about his projects and
passions, and Birgir Guðmundsson, professor of
media studies, about the realities of journalism in
Iceland (page 72). We also meet up-and-coming
photographer Ellen Inga Hannesdóttir (page 52) and
graphic designer Einar Geir Ingvarsson (page 68).
As we go to print, the general election has just
taken place in Iceland. Prior to voting day, we talk to
young people from seven parties, all of whom are on
the ballot (page 80).
Another (very) young person we meet is featured
on our Last Page (page 144). Nine-year-old Batel
Goitom Haile was recently crowned the female U10
chess champion of Iceland.
Her future looks bright. But what about that of
Icelandic nature? Icelandic glaciers, like Vatnajökull,
are melting as a result of climate change. Iceland is a
nation rich in natural resources, on which the
economy heavily depends. Why have we only recently
started to demand that businesses pay for access to
these resources? Columnist Halldór Lárusson
discusses on page 58.
How do we prevent a checkmate?
