Crisp & Cool
The end of summer doesn’t mean
the end of enjoying all the best that
Reykjavík has to offer. With the crisp
autumn weather comes more oppor-
tunity for cosy meals out with friends,
popping into the nearest (and Best™)
bar for a quick drink to escape the wind
and rain, enjoying the autumn colours
while hiking in the capital area, or
shopping for cosy woollens and new
home decor for the season.
Speaking of eating out with friends
— why not start with breakfast? Turn
to pages 18-19 for Shruthi Basappa’s
rundown of the best places in the city to
break your fast. Shruthi also makes the
case for Iceland as a true gastronom-
ic destination over on pages 28-29.
If you’re in the mood for some activ-
ity, you may want to check out Cate
Magnúsdóttir’s account of her zipline
adventure in Hveragerði on pages 32-
33 or plan your fall hiking routes with
tips from Jóhannes Bjarkason and Jón
Trausti Sigurðarson on pages 38-39.
If the colder, darker autumn season
is really getting to you, there’s always
the pick-me-up promised by surround-
ing yourself with beautiful things. We
compiled a Best of Reykjavík shopping
bag of some of our favourite items du
jour over on pages 45-46.
This volume of the Best of Reykjavík
is a whole lot of new – with many new
winners picked by new panels of picky
locals. Panellists contributed their
fresh perspectives on the dining, drink-
ing and shopping experiences the city
offers and give hot recommendations
for the best things to experience in and
around town. We’ve even given space to
one Reykjavíkingur who dares question
our authority to deem anything “best”
(see page 6) — we’re nothing if not
fair.
Give it a read, give it some thought
and try out our recommendations.
Maybe some of our Bests™ will become
some of your new favourites. Let us
know. You can find us on our preferred
patio, smiling in the sunshine.
