Erected in 1988, the Centennial Monument in Markerville was made to
commemorate the years settled by the Icelandic pioneers in Tindastoll, which
later was named Markerville.
The 10 foot tall cream can with three stalks of barley represent the two most
important components of the homesteaders’ life, grain farming and the dairy
industry. For the early farmers, their only source of regular income was the
cream cheque. The inscription reads: “They did so much with so little.” It was
put in place by the Markerville Centennial Committee and the work was done
by metal worker Don Lynn.
