Stefan and his wife
breeds, chosen with the co-operation of the
University Agriculture College in
Saskatoon.
After ten years, Siggi left the Montana
homestead behind and settled at Elfros, on
Birch Creek, where he brought up my
mother Tobba and her sister Sophie. He
retired in about 1945 to Blaine,
Washington, where he owned a two-acre
pasture on the Canadian border, adjoining
the Peace Arch Park. He was forced back
to the U.S.A. because at that time, Canada
had no old age pension.
In the pasture at Blaine, Siggi kept two
purebred Jersey cows, drawing a class of
dairy agriculture students each year from
the University of Washington. Siggi
remained there till he passed on in the fall
of 1957, the week before Sputnik was sent
into orbit.
Steve, Jon and Bjorn continued to farm
in the area north of Mozart, near Little
Quill Lake. There are Arngrimsons in the
area still. The journey is far from over.

by Kristjana Gunnars
A book of stories
In this fictional world on
the Sunshine Coast of
Canada, people attempt to
find in one special place
themasks to hide the detri-
tus of their traumatic past.
Unknown to them, the
past is not so easily
escaped. It lingers in
moments like the rumble of
an earthquake that begins
slowly and passes almost
unnoticed and certainly
unconsidered.
