The Long Ships
Frans H. Bengtsson
Interested in stories of Vikings in the
10th century and their adventures as
they travel around Europe? Interested
in their heroes, their conquests, their
culture? Then join us on January 31st
at 5:30 in the Icelandic reading room
at the Dafoe library on the University
of Manitoba campus to discuss Frans
G. Bengtsson’s book, The Longships,
written in the 1940s. It is the story of
a young man from Denmark who is
captured by Vikings and starts out
as a slave, but becomes a warrior,
a leader, a husband and a father. He
travels to Spain, Ireland, England and
Kiev, encountering new cultures and
religions. This enthralling story will
captivate and entertain. There is scope
for discussion of many aspects of Viking
history and culture.
We welcome anyone to join us, for one
evening or for many. We meet the last
Thursday of the month from January to
May and would love to see some new
faces. It is a marvelous way to meet
members of the Icelandic community
and will appeal to all who love history
and books, book clubs and discussion.
There will be coffee, tea and snacks to
enjoy during the evening.
